Advent Two

Sunday, December 4, 2022
Rev. Teer Hardy
Luke 1:26-38

We are continuing our journey through Advent alongside God's storytellers. Angels have been the deliverers of God's news for generations; delivering instructions, guidance, or warning.

This morning we will explore the Angel Gabriel greeting Mary, delivering the news that through Mary, God would turn the world upside down. Mary's response was simple, "Let it be."

The same invitation to be vessels through which God's Kingdom is built is extended to us. How might we respond to seemingly unreasonable and impossible invitations?

Advent One

Sunday, November 27, 2022
Rev. Sara Keeling
Luke 1:5-25

"11 Then there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was terrified, and fear overwhelmed him. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John. 14 You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord. He must never drink wine or strong drink; even before his birth he will be filled with the Holy Spirit."

Advent Offerings

Make a difference for those in need with a generous donation to the Mount Olivet Advent Offering. Three recipients have been selected whose missions provide assistance to people in need. Thank you for your generosity!

NOVA Friends of Refugees

NFOR is a joint refugee ministry of Mount Olivet and St. George’s Episcopal Church. It has established an emergency fund to help meet urgent needs of recently arriving refugees, especially Afghan newcomers, when other sources of aid have ended.

With your support of the Advent Offering, you may help them pay for next month’s rent, a car repair, driving or English classes, school supplies, a doctor visit, or kitchen items for a family that just arrived after escaping the Taliban.

UMCOR Disaster Response and Recovery

During natural disasters, such as hurricanes and floods, the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) prepares to deploy flood buckets to vulnerable people affected by storms.

UMCOR is working to replace the buckets used in 2022 due to Hurricane Ian and other disasters - and its supply of flood buckets is low.

Flood buckets offer critical support to families in crisis – providing them with basic cleaning supplies to begin to muck out their houses and stop the spread of mold.

This year, the Virginia Conference has collected 3,724 buckets (value of $297,300). The Mission’s goal is to complete more than 4,677 buckets in total – to prepare for next year’s disasters. The UMCOR headquarters in Atlanta has expressed deep appreciation for the amazing success our region has had thus far in funding the buckets - and is deeply grateful for the commitment to helping people improve their lives after a disaster.

Rev. RJ Jun, VAUMC Assoc, Director of Serving Ministries, led the team that coordinated and collected buckets for UMCOR across the Conference. He has prepared an Advent Offering video for Mount Olivet that will be shown at The Way on December 4 and shared online. An UMCOR representative  will speak about the flood bucket campaign at the Sanctuary service.
